Gov. Simon Lalong Addressing the 95th COCIN GCC Meeting

The Church and its leaders have been advised to always emphasize their humanity and ensure that they are in the world and not over or against it so as to maintain a stronghold and earn the confidence of the followers to enhance spiritual nourishment.

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, gave the charge while addressing delegates at the 95th General Church Council (GCC) meeting of the Church of Christ in Nigeria (COCIN) which was held in Jos recently.

The governor gave kudos to the Church for providing educational, health and other social services and keeping alive the dreams of its pioneer missionaries by evangelizing the world for the edification of God’s kingdom.

He said, “Plateau is a project in the hands of and that we are only instruments for the actualization of God’s mandate. We have therefore undertaken to submit ourselves to His leadership so that we can enjoy the Lord’s blessings in governance.”

The governor reiterated that at no point in time had his administration contemplated abandoning the Plateau Project as was being insinuated in certain quarters, noting that by divine intervention, Plateau was a project in God’s hand.

Lalong implored the Church to partner with government, “to clarify issues and records before presenting them beyond the boundaries of Plateau, so that we will give adequate and proper statistics of events unfolding in our State to the outside world.”

Responding, COCIN President, Rev. Dr. Dachollom Datiri, thanked the governor for the visit which he described as historic and commended him for the steps being taken to restore peace to the state.

“Your visit and the large entourage you have come with tells us that you honour us in COCIN. It is with joy that we welcome you to this 95th GCC meeting. We appreciate all that government is doing to touch the lives of the people,” he said.

The COCIN President debunked the claim that COCIN was opposing the government, saying, “COCIN does not take the side of opposition. We have members in all political parties. We cannot take side with any political party. COCIN as a church stands for truth and we follow in the tradition of priest and Kings in the Bible. We will always advise the government. Each time you hear us talking to government do not feel we hate your government.”

Later, special prayers were offered for the governor and the state government after which he led members of his entourage in tithing.
